Police have confirmed their “eyes are open to all possibilities” after the horror stabbing death of a teen on the NSW south coast.
The 18-year-old boy died from a single stab wound to the chest sustained in the driveway of a property in Bomaderry around 7pm on Friday.
He was taken to Shoalhaven Hospital in a critical condition, but died a short time later.
Detective Acting Inspector Ian Griffin from the south coast Police District said a social gathering was taking place at the West Birriley St home at the time of the tragic incident.
Witnesses reportedly told police the teenager had been playing with a large knife in the driveway before accidentally falling on it and sustaining the fatal stab wound.
“There was certainly a gathering at the premises. All the persons there are known to each other, it was a social occasion – the circumstances of what happened next is what is part of our investigation,” Mr Griffin said.
“We certainly are (appealing for attendees to come forward) – we have their details and we’ll be approaching them today.”
The acting Detective inspector said the circumstances surrounding the death remained a mystery at the moment.
“It’s too early to speculate at this time, our eyes are open to all possibilities of what may have occurred,” he said.
He confirmed officers had found the knife at the property which would be subject to forensic examination.
“It’s a terrible set of circumstances – it’s an investigation that should concern the community and we will continue to try and find out what has occurred,” Mr Griffin said.
Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward to police or contact Crime Stoppers.
Mr Griffin assured the public that any information provided would be kept confidential and could be given anonymously.
