Boxing fans are set to be treated to the best fight in the history of Australian women’s boxing when Ebanie Bridges and Shannon O’Connell go head-to-head in an absolute “war” this weekend.

The pair will face off in the biggest fight on the undercard of the Josh Warrington vs Luis Alberto Lopez bout in Leeds on Sunday morning AEDT.

The fight will be Bridges’ first title defence after claiming the IBF bantamweight title belt in a brutal unanimous decision win over Maria Cecilia Roman in March.

A fight between Bridges (8-1, 3 KO) and O’Connell (23-6-1, 11 KO) has been a long time coming and there is no love lost between them.

O’Connell has repeatedly criticised Bridges for wearing lingerie at weigh-ins, labelling her rivals a “skanky stripper” for her pre-fight ritual.

This week Bridges said that comment has given her added motivation to beat her fellow Aussie.

“The skanky stripper thing – I’m was gonna get shirts made up that say ‘skanky stripper’,” Bridges told the Main Event boxing podcast.

Tensions bubbled over again at a public training session when O’Connell appeared astonished at Bridges’ reported weight several days out from the fight.

“That’s bulls**t. She’s a fat c***,” O’Connell said.

“There’s not a chance she was at 55kg this morning.”

Women’s bantamweight fighters will need to weigh in at 53.5kg to make weight.

“I wonder how you’re gonna explain that you got beat by a skanky stripper that doesn’t take the sport seriously?”

O’Connell clarified her claim, making it very clear she is not fond of her opponent whatsoever

“She’s not a skanky stripper, she’s a skanky stripper wannabe,” O’Connell told Fox Sports.

“She is a skank, that’s for sure. But I’ve seen strippers look nicer than her.”

Bridges is now based in the UK and has come under fire come O’Connell for holding the title fight in Leeds instead of on Australian soil.

“Just the pure disrespect she’s had for Australian boxing. I’ve been told she was saying if we won the purse bid, she’d rather vacate than fight again in Australia,” O’Connell said.

“To me, most Aussies that leave Australia they want to come back and defend their titles or fight in front of their home fans, especially when they think they’re as global and as big as she does.

“So why wouldn’t she want to fight in front of her home crowd if she’s an Aussie?”

Bad blood aside, the bout between Bridges and 39-year-old O’Connell, who has long been dubbed “the queen of Australian boxing”, is a watershed moment for Australian’s women’s boxing.

Australian boxing legend Jeff Fenech is predicting Bridges to win via decision, but is expecting an absolute war.

“I think Ebanie will win on points,” Fenech told news.com.au.

“I think it’ll go the distance, for sure. It will be a war, 100 per cent.

“It’s going to be tit-for-tat. They’re going to go for it.

“I think Ebanie’s getting better and better. She’s over there training and doing all the hard work. It’s a pretty even fight. I’m going with Ebanie. When you win that title, it’ll be hard to take it off her.”

As for the bad blood over Bridges wearing lingerie?

“Ebanie does things the way she believes, that’s just how she is,” Fenech said.

“She doesn’t give a rat’s arse about what you or I think about the way she dresses, the way she looks, the way she talks. I take my hat off to her because it’s not false, it’s just her.

“She’s not putting a show on for anybody. She’s just doing what she thinks is right.”

The standard of female fighting has improved markedly in recent years and the Bridges-O’Connell fight will expose Australian boxing to a global audience.

“This is a huge opportunity for Australian women’s boxing,” Fenech said.

“This is going to be a spectacular fight. People are going to be talking about Australian boxing after this weekend and they’re going to be talking about women.

“It’s not going to be Tim Tszyu or anybody else. They’re going to be talking about the ladies because both these girls, they go to fight and they put on great fights.”

Main Event boxing commentator Ben Damon added: “Female boxing globally is experiencing a stunning boom with significant and entertaining fights prominently placed on big shows with increased regularity, to the point that the term ‘female boxing’ has almost expired in relevance.

“The distinction between a good male fight and a good female fight doesn’t matter and soon people won’t even say ‘male boxing’ or ‘female boxing’ – just boxing.

“Broadly Australian boxing has never been in a stronger position than it is right now and the fact that Bridges and O’Connell are fighting at this moment in time is perfect for the sport, and represents a magnificent opportunity for the winner to take their profile and earning capacity to untold levels within the female side of the sport here.

“What’s more this is a brilliant match-up stylistically between two ‘come forward’ fighters.

“You’ve got the emerging warrior and relentless world champion in Ebanie Bridges and the brutally skilled and experienced challenger in O’Connell.

“Given the spiteful animosity between the two very entertaining boxers and the fact that they can both seriously fight it simply cannot help but be a great world title clash.

“Plus there is so much on the line in a fight that represents the biggest all-Aussie bout ever between two females that we could well see something truly special.”
